Orange, wholeShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1 week
Store at cool room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Do not wash until ready to eat.
Refrigerator
3-4 weeks
Store in a crisper drawer or mesh bag to allow for air circulation. Do not wash until ready to eat.
Freezer
Not recommended whole; segments 10-12 months
Whole oranges are not recommended for freezing due to texture changes. For freezing, peel, separate into segments, remove seeds, and pack in airtight containers or freezer bags. Can also be frozen as juice.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft spots or mushy texture
- Mold growth (white, green, or blue fuzzy spots)
- Discoloration (darkening or dullness of skin)
- Off-odor or fermented smell
- Leaking juice
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' is the temperature range between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C) where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
While whole, intact oranges are less susceptible to rapid bacterial growth than other perishable foods, prolonged exposure to room temperature, especially above 70°F (21°C), can accelerate spoilage and reduce quality. For best quality and extended shelf life, refrigerate after 1 week at room temperature.
Safe Handling
Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash oranges under cool running tap water just before eating, cutting, or cooking. Scrub with a clean produce brush if desired.
Do not use soap, detergent, or commercial produce washes.
Cut away any bruised or damaged areas before eating.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping oranges separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
