Pantry

1 week

Store whole, fresh oranges in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not wash until ready to eat.

Refrigerator

3-4 weeks

Store whole, fresh oranges in a mesh bag or crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Avoid storing in airtight containers as they need air circulation.

Freezer

10-12 months

To freeze, peel and separate into segments, removing seeds and pith. Pack in freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible. Can also be frozen as juice.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Visible mold (white, green, or blue fuzzy growth)
  • Discoloration or darkening of the peel
  • Off-odor or fermented smell
  • Leaking juice

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C) for cut oranges.

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Whole, uncut oranges are safe at room temperature for up to a week. Once cut, oranges should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90°F/32°C) to prevent bacterial growth. Promptly refrigerate cut oranges.
