Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Mold growth (fuzzy white, green, or black spots)
  • Off-odor, sour, or fermented smell
  • Significant discoloration or dark spots beyond normal ripening

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods, including cut papaya, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Always refrigerate cut papaya promptly. Whole, unripe papayas can be left at room temperature to ripen, but once ripe, they should be refrigerated or consumed.
