Pantry

1-2 months

Store in a cool, dark, dry place in an airtight container to prevent rancidity and pest infestation. Unshelled peanuts may last longer.

Refrigerator

6 months

Store in an airtight container or heavy-duty plastic bag to prevent absorption of odors and moisture, which can lead to rancidity.

Freezer

1 year

Store in a heavy-duty freezer bag or airtight container. Freezing extends shelf life significantly and helps prevent rancidity. Thaw in the refrigerator before use.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Rancid or bitter taste
  • Off-odor (sour, paint-like, or chemical smell)
  • Mold growth (fuzzy spots, discoloration)
  • Shriveled or dried-out appearance
  • Soft or rubbery texture (for roasted peanuts)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave perishable foods, including shelled peanuts if they contain added ingredients that are perishable (e.g., flavored, honey-roasted with dairy), at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The danger zone for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

While plain, dry peanuts are generally shelf-stable, once opened or if they contain perishable ingredients, they should be consumed or stored properly within the 2-hour limit to prevent bacterial growth and rancidity.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

Always wash hands before and after handling peanuts.

2

Check for signs of spoilage such as mold or rancid odor before consumption.
