Fresh peas should be refrigerated immediately after purchase or shelling to maintain quality and safety.

Refrigerator

3-5 days

Store fresh, unshelled peas in their pods in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper drawer. Shelled peas should be stored in an airtight container.

Freezer

8-12 months

For best quality and safety, blanch fresh peas before freezing. Cool quickly in ice water, drain thoroughly, then pack into airtight freezer bags or containers, leaving headspace. Frozen peas do not require thawing before cooking.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Off-odor or sour smell
  • Visible mold growth
  • Discoloration (yellowing or browning of pods/peas)

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Fresh peas should not be left at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), they should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

2

Wash fresh peas under running water before shelling or cooking.
