Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended

Peeled onions are highly perishable and should be refrigerated promptly. Pantry storage is unsafe for extended periods.

Refrigerator

7-10 days

Store peeled red onion in a sealed airtight container or plastic bag to prevent odor transfer and maintain freshness. Place in the crisper drawer.

Freezer

10-12 months

Chop or slice peeled red onion before freezing. Store in airtight freezer bags or containers. Blanching is not necessary but can help preserve texture.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft or mushy texture
  • Off-odor (strong, unpleasant smell)
  • Discoloration (dark spots, yellowing)
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable foods, including peeled red onion, at room temperature (above 40°F / 4°C) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate or freeze peeled red onion to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any peeled onion left in the danger zone for too long.
