Pantry

1-3 months

Store in a cool, dark, dry place in an airtight container to prevent rancidity and absorption of odors.

Refrigerator

6 months

Store in an airtight container to protect from moisture and odors, which can affect flavor and shelf life.

Freezer

1 year

For longer storage, freeze in a heavy-duty freezer bag or airtight container to prevent freezer burn and maintain quality.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Rancid or bitter taste
  • Off-odor, often described as paint-like or chemical
  • Mold growth
  • Discoloration or shriveled appearance
  • Soft or rubbery texture (should be firm and crisp)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave perishable foods, including shelled nuts, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

While whole, unshelled nuts are less susceptible, shelled nuts can become rancid more quickly at room temperature. Always store in a cool, dry place or refrigerate/freeze for extended freshness.
