Pomegranate seeds are highly perishable and should be refrigerated promptly after deseeding. Do not store at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Refrigerator
5-7 days
Store fresh pomegranate seeds (arils) in a sealed, airtight container or bag in the refrigerator. Ensure they are dry before storing to prevent mold.
Freezer
10-12 months
Spread pomegranate seeds in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer to an airtight freezer-safe bag or container. Remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mushy or slimy texture
- Sour or off odor
- Visible mold growth
- Discoloration (darkening or unusual spots)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
To ensure safety, always refrigerate pomegranate seeds promptly after deseeding. Discard any seeds left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash the whole pomegranate under cool running water before deseeding.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping pomegranate seeds separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
Refrigerate promptly after deseeding; do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
