Prepared HorseradishShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1-2 years (unopened)
Store unopened jars in a cool, dark pantry away from direct sunlight and heat. Once opened, it must be refrigerated.
Refrigerator
1-3 months (opened)
Always refrigerate prepared horseradish immediately after opening. Keep tightly sealed to maintain freshness and prevent flavor loss. Raw horseradish root can be stored in the refrigerator in a plastic bag for 1-2 weeks.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended for prepared horseradish
Freezing prepared horseradish is not recommended as it can significantly alter its texture and pungent flavor. Raw horseradish root, however, can be peeled, grated, and mixed with a small amount of vinegar, then frozen in airtight containers or freezer bags for up to 6 months.
Signs of Spoilage
- Loss of pungent flavor
- Off-odor
- Discoloration (darkening or browning)
- Mold growth
- Unusual texture
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
Prepared horseradish, once opened, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), it should not be left out for more than 1 hour. Discard any prepared horseradish left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Always use clean utensils when serving prepared horseradish to prevent cross-contamination.
Keep the jar tightly sealed when not in use.
Refrigerate promptly after each use.
For raw horseradish root, wash thoroughly before peeling and grating. Wear gloves to protect hands from irritation.
