Queso fresco is a perishable fresh cheese and requires constant refrigeration. Do not store at room temperature.
Refrigerator
1 week (after opening)
Store in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in its original packaging to prevent drying out and absorption of odors. Keep at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
1-2 months
While safe for extended storage, freezing queso fresco is not recommended for quality. The texture will become crumbly and watery upon thawing.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Visible mold growth
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Discoloration
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C).
Perishable foods, including queso fresco, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour before it should be discarded.
Safe Handling
Always keep queso fresco refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Avoid cross-contamination by using clean utensils and cutting boards when handling.
Do not leave queso fresco at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
