Pantry

2-3 days

Store at cool room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Quality declines rapidly.

Refrigerator

1-2 weeks

Store unwashed rambutans in a perforated plastic bag or container in the refrigerator's crisper drawer to maintain humidity and prevent drying out.

Freezer

8-12 months

For best quality, peel and pit rambutans before freezing. Store in airtight freezer bags or containers. Texture may change upon thawing.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Mold growth (fuzzy white or colored spots)
  • Discoloration (darkening or browning of the skin or flesh)
  • Sour or off-odor
  • Leaking or sticky residue

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable food should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

While rambutans can be stored at room temperature for a very short period, refrigeration is recommended to extend their shelf life and maintain quality. Discard any fruit left in the danger zone for too long.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash rambutans thoroughly under cool running water before peeling or eating.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping fresh produce separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.

3

Discard any rambutans that show signs of spoilage, such as mold or significant discoloration.
