Raw Angus Beef BurgerShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Raw beef burgers must be refrigerated or frozen immediately upon purchase. Pantry storage is not recommended due to rapid bacterial growth at room temperature.
Refrigerator
1-2 days
Store raw beef burgers in their original packaging or in a clean, shallow container to prevent drips onto other foods. Place on the lowest shelf of the refrigerator, set at 40°F (4.4°C) or below.
Freezer
3-4 months
For best quality, wrap raw beef burgers tightly in heavy-duty aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or freezer paper, or place in a freezer bag. Label with the date of freezing. Freeze at 0°F (-18°C) or below.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Sticky or slimy texture
- Dull or grayish-brown color
- Mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4.4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Never leave raw beef burgers out at room temperature. Refrigerate or freeze promptly after purchase. Discard any raw beef left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Cook all ground beef, including burgers, to an internal temperature of 160°F (71.1°C) as measured with a food thermometer.
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat.
Use separate cutting boards, plates, and utensils for raw and cooked meat to prevent cross-contamination.
Thaw frozen raw beef burgers safely in the refrigerator, in cold water (changing water every 30 minutes), or in the microwave. Never thaw on the counter at room temperature.
Marinate raw beef burgers in the refrigerator, never at room temperature.
