Pantry

2-7 days (until ripe)

Store unripe red bananas at room temperature (60-70°F or 15-21°C) away from direct sunlight and other ripening fruits. Once ripe, consume or move to the refrigerator.

Refrigerator

2-9 days (for ripe bananas)

Store ripe red bananas in the refrigerator to slow further ripening. The skin may turn black, but the fruit inside remains good. Do not refrigerate unripe bananas as it can stop the ripening process.

Freezer

2-3 months

Peel ripe red bananas before freezing. Store whole or sliced in airtight freezer bags or containers. Best for smoothies, baking, or other cooked applications.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Excessive softness or mushiness
  • Mold growth (fuzzy white, green, or black spots)
  • Foul or fermented odor
  • Leaking or weeping liquid

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Do not leave cut or peeled red bananas at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

Safe Handling

1

Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling fresh produce.
