Red Cheddar CheeseShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Cheddar cheese is a perishable dairy product and should be refrigerated for safety and quality. Pantry storage is not recommended for opened or unopened cheese.
Refrigerator
3-4 weeks (opened)
Store opened cheddar cheese tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or in an airtight container, to prevent drying out and mold growth. For unopened cheese, it can last up to 6 months in the refrigerator.
Freezer
6 months
While safe to freeze, the texture of cheddar cheese may become crumbly after thawing. It is best used in cooked dishes after freezing. Wrap tightly in freezer-safe wrap or bags.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold (other than intentional mold on certain specialty cheeses)
- Sour, ammonia-like, or off-odors
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Significant discoloration
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate cheddar cheese after purchase and use. Discard any cheese left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time limits.
Safe Handling
Keep cheddar cheese refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for cheese and raw meats.
If mold appears on hard cheese, cut off at least 1 inch around and below the mold spot. Do not use the knife to cut into the mold itself.
Do not leave cheese at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F / 32°C).
