Red RaspberryShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Fresh raspberries are highly perishable and should be refrigerated immediately after purchase. Pantry storage will significantly reduce shelf life and increase spoilage risk.
Refrigerator
1-3 days
Store unwashed raspberries in a single layer in a shallow container lined with a paper towel. Cover loosely and refrigerate. Wash gently just before eating.
Freezer
10-12 months
Do not wash before freezing. Spread raspberries in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer to freezer bags or airtight containers, removing as much air as possible. Label with the date.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold growth (fuzzy white, gray, or green spots)
- Soft, mushy, or watery texture
- Dull or faded color
- Sour, fermented, or off-odor
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Fresh raspberries should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and should not be left out at room temperature for extended periods to prevent rapid spoilage and bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash raspberries gently under cool running water just before consumption. Do not wash them before storing, as moisture can accelerate spoilage.
Keep fresh raspberries separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood to prevent cross-contamination.
Discard any raspberries that show signs of mold, mushiness, or an off-odor immediately.
