Pantry

1-2 years (opened)

Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep tightly sealed. May solidify below 76°F (24°C) but this does not affect quality or safety.

Refrigerator

Indefinite for safety; quality/texture may be affected

Refrigeration is not necessary and will cause the oil to become very hard, making it difficult to use. Allow to come to room temperature to soften before use.

Freezer

Indefinite for safety; quality/texture may be affected

Freezing is not necessary and will cause the oil to become solid. Not recommended for ease of use.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Rancid, soapy, or metallic odor
  • Bitter or sour taste
  • Darker color or cloudy appearance (if not normally cloudy)
  • Thickened texture (beyond normal solidification)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to perishable foods. Refined coconut oil is a shelf-stable product.

Not applicable to shelf-stable oils as microbial growth is not the primary spoilage concern.

Store in a cool, dark place. While shelf-stable, prolonged exposure to high temperatures or direct sunlight can accelerate rancidity.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

2

Use clean, dry utensils when scooping oil to prevent contamination.

3
