Rice MilkShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Unopened, shelf-stable: Until 'best by' date (typically several months to 1 year). Opened: Unsafe.
Store unopened, shelf-stable rice milk in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Once opened, rice milk must be refrigerated and is not safe for pantry storage.
Refrigerator
Opened: 7-10 days. Unopened, refrigerated: Until 'best by' date.
Keep rice milk tightly sealed in its original container. Store on an inside shelf, not in the door, where temperatures fluctuate.
Freezer
Up to 6 months
Freeze in airtight containers, leaving headspace as liquid expands. Thaw in the refrigerator. Texture may change upon thawing, making it best for cooking or smoothies.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Lumpy or curdled texture
- Discoloration
- Mold growth
- Bloated or bulging packaging (for unopened containers, indicating bacterial activity)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for rapid bacterial growth in food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate or discard opened rice milk that has been left in the danger zone for too long. Never taste food to determine its safety.
Safe Handling
Always check the 'best by' or 'use by' date on the packaging.
Refrigerate immediately after opening, even if it was shelf-stable.
Do not consume if left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90°F/32°C).
Avoid cross-contamination by using clean utensils and containers when pouring or serving.
