Salad DressingShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Best by date (unopened)
Store unopened commercial salad dressing in a cool, dark pantry. Once opened, it must be refrigerated.
Refrigerator
1-2 months (opened, commercial)
Keep opened commercial salad dressing tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Homemade salad dressings should be refrigerated and used within 3-4 days.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Freezing salad dressing is not recommended as it can cause ingredients to separate, altering the texture and quality significantly.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, rancid, or unusual smell)
- Visible mold growth
- Significant discoloration
- Unusual separation of ingredients (beyond normal oil/vinegar separation that can be shaken back together)
- Slimy or unusually thick texture
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
To ensure safety, opened salad dressing should be refrigerated promptly after use. Discard any dressing that has been in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Always refrigerate commercial salad dressing immediately after opening.
Discard any salad dressing that has been left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
Always use clean utensils when serving to prevent cross-contamination.
