Salad DressingsShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Until 'best by' date (unopened, shelf-stable)
Store unopened, shelf-stable dressings in a cool, dark place. Once opened, most dressings require refrigeration.
Refrigerator
1-2 months (opened)
Always refrigerate opened salad dressings promptly. Keep tightly sealed. Some dressings (e.g., fresh, dairy-based) require refrigeration even before opening; always check the product label.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Freezing is not recommended for most salad dressings as it can cause ingredients to separate and alter texture and flavor, especially for emulsion-based or dairy-based dressings.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor or sour smell
- Visible mold growth
- Significant discoloration
- Unusual separation of ingredients that doesn't recombine with shaking
- Fizzy appearance or bubbling
- Change in texture (e.g., slimy, overly thick, or watery)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Opened dressings should be returned to the refrigerator as soon as possible after serving. Discard any dressing that has been in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Always check the 'best by' or 'use by' date on the label for unopened dressings.
Refrigerate all opened salad dressings promptly after use.
Discard any dressing left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
Do not consume if there are any signs of spoilage.
