Pantry

1-2 years

Store dried sea mustard in its original airtight packaging or a sealed container in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Once opened, reseal tightly.

Refrigerator

3-5 days

Store fresh sea mustard in a sealed bag or container in the refrigerator. Rehydrated dried sea mustard should also be stored in an airtight container and used within 3-5 days.

Freezer

8-12 months

To freeze fresh sea mustard, blanch it briefly, then cool quickly, drain, and pack into airtight freezer bags or containers, removing as much air as possible. Label with the date.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Off-odor (e.g., unusually strong, fishy, or sour smell)
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Significant discoloration (e.g., dark spots, fading)
  • Presence of mold
  • Dried sea mustard becoming damp or clumping

Room Temperature Safety

Follow the 2-hour rule: Do not leave sea mustard at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), reduce this time to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Promptly refrigerate or freeze sea mustard after purchase or preparation. Discard any sea mustard left in the danger zone for too long to prevent bacterial growth.
