Fresh serviceberries are highly perishable and should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods. Refrigerate immediately.

Refrigerator

1-2 days

Store unwashed serviceberries in a shallow container lined with a paper towel in the refrigerator. Wash gently just before consumption.

Freezer

10-12 months

Wash and dry serviceberries thoroughly. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze until solid, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth
  • Mushy or soft texture
  • Sour or off odor
  • Discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Perishable foods, including fresh serviceberries, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), they should not be left out for more than 1 hour, as bacteria multiply rapidly in the danger zone.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash hands with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.

2

Wash serviceberries gently under cool running water just before eating. Do not wash them in advance, as moisture can promote spoilage.

3

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping serviceberries separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
