Pantry

Unopened: Until 'best by' date

Store unopened packages in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze unopened shelf-stable tofu as it can affect texture.

Refrigerator

Opened: 3-5 days

Once opened, drain and store in an airtight container covered with fresh, clean water. Change water daily. Refrigerate promptly.

Freezer

3-4 months (for best quality)

Drain and press tofu thoroughly before freezing. Cut into desired portions. Freeze in an airtight container or freezer bag. Thaw in the refrigerator. Freezing changes the texture, making it chewier and firmer, which some prefer.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Discoloration (darkening or unusual spots)
  • Mold growth
  • Bulging or leaking packaging (for unopened shelf-stable tofu)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to opened or cooked tofu. Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Promptly refrigerate opened tofu. Discard any opened tofu left in the danger zone for too long.
