Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended (once opened)

Unopened packages may be stored at room temperature until the 'best by' date, but refrigeration is always recommended for quality. Once opened, do not store in pantry.

Refrigerator

3-4 weeks (opened)

Store in original packaging or a tightly sealed container or bag to prevent drying out and absorption of odors. Keep at 40°F (4°C) or below.

Freezer

6 months

Freeze in original unopened package or rewrap in airtight freezer bags or heavy-duty aluminum foil. Thaw in the refrigerator. The texture may become crumbly after freezing, but it remains safe to eat.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Visible mold growth (especially fuzzy or discolored spots)
  • Off-odor (sour, ammonia-like, or yeasty smell)
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Significant discoloration beyond normal variations

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable foods, including shredded cheese, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate or discard shredded cheese that has been left in the danger zone for too long.
