Pasteurized skimmed milk requires constant refrigeration. Only unopened, shelf-stable (UHT) skimmed milk can be stored in the pantry until opened.

Refrigerator

5-7 days

Store immediately in the coldest part of the refrigerator (40°F/4°C or below). Keep tightly sealed.

Freezer

3 months

Freeze in airtight containers, leaving about 1 inch of headspace as milk expands. Thaw in the refrigerator. Quality may be affected (separation).

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour smell
  • Lumpy or curdled texture
  • Discoloration (e.g., yellowish tint)
  • Mold growth
  • Bloated or bulging container

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave perishable foods, including milk, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate or discard milk that has been left out within the danger zone for too long to prevent the rapid growth of harmful bacteria.
