Sliced AvocadoShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Sliced avocado should not be stored at room temperature for more than 2 hours. It will brown and spoil rapidly.
Refrigerator
3-4 days
Store sliced avocado in an airtight container. To prevent browning, sprinkle with lemon or lime juice, or place a piece of onion in the container with the avocado, or store with the pit if possible.
Freezer
3-4 months
For best quality, mash or puree avocado with 1/2 teaspoon ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice per two avocados before freezing. Store in airtight freezer bags or containers. Sliced avocado can be frozen, but texture may change upon thawing.
Signs of Spoilage
- Dark brown or black discoloration beyond normal browning (oxidation)
- Sour or off-odor
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Presence of mold
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Always refrigerate sliced avocado promptly. Discard any sliced avocado left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time limits.
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash avocados under running water before cutting, even if you don't plan to eat the peel.
Prevent cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for produce and raw meat, poultry, or seafood.
Refrigerate sliced avocado promptly within 2 hours of cutting. If left out at room temperature above 90°F (32°C), refrigerate within 1 hour.
