Not recommended

Sliced papaya is highly perishable and should be refrigerated immediately after cutting to maintain safety and quality.

Refrigerator

3-5 days

Store sliced papaya in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below to prevent drying out and absorption of odors.

Freezer

10-12 months

For best quality, freeze sliced papaya in a single layer on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to freezer bags or airtight containers. Can be frozen with a light syrup or sugar to help maintain texture.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Off-odor or sour smell
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Visible mold growth
  • Significant discoloration (darkening or browning)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable food out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate sliced papaya to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any sliced papaya left at room temperature for longer than 2 hours (or 1 hour if above 90°F/32°C).
