Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended

Sliced onions should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods. Whole, uncut onions can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place.

Refrigerator

7-10 days

Store sliced onions in a sealed container or plastic bag to prevent odor transfer to other foods and maintain freshness. Place in the crisper drawer.

Freezer

3-6 months

Peel and slice onions. For best quality, blanching is recommended but not strictly necessary for safety. Pack in airtight freezer bags or containers, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft or mushy spots
  • Mold growth
  • Strong, unpleasant pungent odor
  • Slimy texture
  • Discoloration (darkening or unusual spots)

Room Temperature Safety

Do not leave sliced onions at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Always refrigerate sliced onions promptly. If left out, discard any that have been in the danger zone for too long.
