Not Recommended

Unsafe

Sour cream must be refrigerated at all times to prevent spoilage and bacterial growth. Do not store at room temperature.

Refrigerator

1-3 weeks

Keep sour cream tightly covered in its original container in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Do not store in the refrigerator door, as temperatures fluctuate there.

Freezer

Not recommended for quality; safe for 1-2 months

Freezing sour cream is not recommended as it may separate and become watery upon thawing, affecting its texture and consistency. If freezing for safety, transfer to an airtight, freezer-safe container, leaving headspace.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth (any color)
  • Sour, off, or pungent odor
  • Yellowish discoloration
  • Excessive liquid separation (whey) beyond normal
  • Unusual texture, such as sliminess or lumpiness

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable foods, including sour cream, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate sour cream after use. Discard any sour cream that has been left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time limits.
