Unsafe for extended storage

Once green peas are soaked, they become highly perishable and should not be stored at room temperature for more than 2 hours. For immediate use, keep covered.

Refrigerator

3-4 days

Store soaked green peas in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Change the water daily if continuing to soak, or drain well if ready for use.

Freezer

8 months

Blanch green peas for 1-2 minutes, then cool quickly in ice water, drain thoroughly, and pack into airtight freezer bags or containers. Remove as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Visible mold growth
  • Significant discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Soaked green peas should be refrigerated promptly if not used immediately. Discard any soaked peas left in the danger zone for too long.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Rinse soaked green peas thoroughly under cold running water before use.

2

If cooking, ensure they reach an appropriate internal temperature for the dish.

3

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw soaked peas separate from other foods, especially ready-to-eat items.

4

Wash hands, cutting boards, utensils, and countertops with hot, soapy water after handling raw produce.
