Pantry

Until 'best by' date (unopened, shelf-stable); Unsafe (opened)

Store unopened, shelf-stable soy milk in a cool, dark pantry. Once opened, soy milk must be refrigerated immediately and not stored at room temperature.

Refrigerator

7-10 days (opened)

Keep opened soy milk tightly sealed in its original container or an airtight container. Store on an interior shelf, not in the door, for consistent temperature.

Freezer

Up to 6 months

Soy milk can be frozen, but its texture may change (become grainy or separate) upon thawing. Freeze in airtight containers, leaving headspace as liquids expand when frozen. Thaw in the refrigerator.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off-odor
  • Curdled, lumpy, or unusually thick texture
  • Discoloration (e.g., yellowish tint)
  • Mold growth
  • Bloated or leaking packaging (for unopened cartons)

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Do not leave opened soy milk at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), do not leave it out for more than 1 hour, as bacteria multiply rapidly in the danger zone.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always check the 'best by' or 'use by' date on unopened packages.

2

Refrigerate opened soy milk promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.

3

Do not drink directly from the carton to prevent contamination.

4

If freezing, consider using thawed soy milk in cooked dishes or smoothies where texture changes are less noticeable.
