Pantry
2-5 years (unopened)
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For best quality, consume within 2-5 years, though safely stored low-acid canned goods can last indefinitely if the can remains in good condition.
Refrigerator
3-4 days (opened)
Once opened, transfer unused Spam to an airtight container or wrap tightly in plastic wrap or foil. Refrigerate promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
1-2 months (opened)
For best quality, freeze opened Spam in its original can or transfer to a freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag. Label with the date. While safe indefinitely, quality may decline after 1-2 months.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, putrid)
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Mold growth
- Discoloration
- Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened product)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C). Food should not remain in this temperature range for extended periods.
Opened Spam should be refrigerated promptly to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Discard any opened Spam left out within the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Always wash hands with soap and water before and after handling food.
Refrigerate opened Spam promptly; do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90°F/32°C).
Prevent cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for raw and ready-to-eat foods.
If reheating, ensure it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
