Spinach requires refrigeration to maintain freshness and safety.

Refrigerator

3-7 days

Store unwashed fresh spinach in its original packaging or a loose plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly under running water just before use.

Freezer

10-12 months

For best quality, blanch spinach before freezing. Wash, blanch in boiling water for 2 minutes, cool rapidly in ice water, drain well, and pack into airtight freezer bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Off or sour odor
  • Significant wilting or mushiness
  • Discoloration (yellowing or browning)
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Do not leave fresh spinach at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour, as bacteria multiply rapidly in the danger zone.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash fresh spinach thoroughly under running water just before use to remove dirt and potential contaminants.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw spinach separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.

3

Discard any spinach that shows signs of spoilage immediately.

4

Do not wash spinach until you are ready to use it, as moisture can accelerate spoilage.
