Pantry

Not Recommended

Unsafe

Frozen squid should never be stored at pantry temperatures. It must remain frozen until ready to thaw and cook.

Refrigerator

1-2 days

Thaw frozen squid in the refrigerator. Once thawed, store in a clean, covered container on the lowest shelf to prevent drips onto other foods. Cook within 1-2 days.

Freezer

6-12 months

Keep squid frozen at 0°F (-18°C) or below in its original airtight packaging or a freezer-safe bag to prevent freezer burn.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Strong, sour, or 'fishy' odor
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Dull or faded color
  • Any signs of mold

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Perishable foods, including thawed squid, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Always refrigerate or freeze squid promptly. If thawed squid has been left out at room temperature within the danger zone for too long, it should be discarded.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Thaw frozen squid in the refrigerator, in cold water (changing water every 30 minutes), or in the microwave. Never thaw at room temperature.

2

Cook squid to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).

3

Prevent cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards, plates, and utensils for raw and cooked seafood.

4

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw squid.
