Homemade stewed apple should be refrigerated promptly. Unopened commercially canned stewed apple or applesauce can be stored in the pantry according to its 'Best By' date, but once opened, it must be refrigerated.
Refrigerator
3-4 days
Store in a clean, airtight container at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
8-12 months
Cool completely before freezing. Store in freezer-safe airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving headspace for expansion. For best quality, use within 8-12 months.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth on the surface
- Off-odor, such as a sour or fermented smell
- Discoloration or darkening beyond normal
- Unusual sliminess or stickiness
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate or freeze stewed apple after preparation or serving to minimize time spent in the danger zone.
Safe Handling
Cool stewed apple rapidly before refrigerating or freezing, ideally within 2 hours after cooking.
Reheat thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) if serving warm.
