Strawberries are highly perishable and should be refrigerated immediately after purchase for best quality and safety.
Refrigerator
3-7 days
Store unwashed strawberries in their original container or a shallow, breathable container lined with a paper towel to absorb moisture. Wash just before eating.
Freezer
8-12 months
Wash, hull, and dry strawberries thoroughly before freezing. Freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to freezer bags or airtight containers.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft, mushy texture
- Mold (white or gray fuzzy spots)
- Dull color
- Sour or fermented odor
- Leaking juices
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Fresh strawberries should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), they should not be left out for more than 1 hour.
Safe Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash strawberries under cool running water just before eating or preparing. Do not use soap or detergent.
Remove any bruised or damaged areas before eating.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping strawberries separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
