Swiss chard is highly perishable and should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods. Store in the refrigerator immediately after purchase.

Refrigerator

3-4 days

Store unwashed Swiss chard in a loose or perforated plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly just before use.

Freezer

10-12 months

To freeze Swiss chard, blanch the leaves for 2-3 minutes in boiling water, then immediately cool in ice water. Drain thoroughly, squeeze out excess water, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Significant wilting or limpness of leaves
  • Yellowing or browning of leaves
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Off-odor or sour smell
  • Presence of mold

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Swiss chard, like other fresh produce, should be refrigerated promptly. Leaving it at room temperature for extended periods can lead to rapid wilting and spoilage, and increase the risk of bacterial growth.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash Swiss chard thoroughly under running water before consuming or cooking to remove dirt and potential contaminants.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw Swiss chard separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.

3

Discard any wilted, discolored, or slimy leaves.

4

Cook Swiss chard to desired tenderness; it does not require a specific internal temperature for safety, but ensure it is heated through.
