Opened Swiss cheese should be refrigerated immediately to maintain safety and quality.

Refrigerator

3-4 weeks

Store opened Swiss cheese tightly wrapped in plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or in an airtight container. Place in the coldest part of the refrigerator.

Freezer

6 months

For best quality, freeze Swiss cheese in small portions, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil or a freezer bag. Thaw in the refrigerator. Note that freezing may alter texture.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Visible mold (other than intentional mold on certain cheeses, which Swiss cheese does not have)
  • Off-odor or sour smell
  • Slimy or unusually hard texture
  • Discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable foods, including Swiss cheese, at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate Swiss cheese after purchase and after serving to minimize time spent in the danger zone.
