TangerinesShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1 week
Store whole, unwashed tangerines in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight for optimal quality. Refrigerate for longer storage.
Refrigerator
2-3 weeks
Store whole, unwashed tangerines in a mesh bag or the crisper drawer of the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent moisture buildup. Do not wash until ready to eat.
Freezer
10-12 months
To freeze, peel tangerines and separate into segments, removing any seeds. Freeze segments in a single layer on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or airtight containers. Can also be frozen as juice or in syrup.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft spots or mushy texture
- Visible mold growth (white, green, or black fuzzy spots)
- Shriveled or dried-out skin
- Off-odor or fermented smell
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for perishable foods is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly. This applies to cut tangerines.
For best quality, store whole tangerines at room temperature for up to a week. Once cut, promptly refrigerate any unused portions in an airtight container and consume within 2-3 days.
Safe Handling
Wash whole tangerines thoroughly under running water before peeling or cutting to remove dirt and surface contaminants.
Avoid cross-contamination by using clean cutting boards, utensils, and hands when preparing tangerines, especially if other foods are being handled.
Discard any tangerines that show signs of spoilage such as mold or significant softness.
