Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Fresh thyme should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods. Dried thyme, however, can be stored in a cool, dark pantry.
Refrigerator
1-2 weeks
Wrap fresh thyme in a slightly damp paper towel, then place it in a plastic bag or airtight container. Alternatively, place stems upright in a glass of water, cover loosely with a plastic bag, and refrigerate.
Freezer
10-12 months
Wash and pat dry fresh thyme. You can freeze whole sprigs in an airtight freezer bag, or chop and freeze in ice cube trays with water or olive oil.
Signs of Spoilage
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Darkening or yellowing of leaves
- Mold growth
- Off-odor
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
To maintain safety and quality, fresh thyme should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and removed from refrigeration only when ready to use.
Safe Handling
Always wash fresh thyme under cool running water before use to remove dirt and debris.
Pat dry thoroughly before storing or using, especially if freezing.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping fresh herbs separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
