Tomato KetchupShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Until 'best by' date
Store unopened bottles in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, always refrigerate.
Refrigerator
6 months
Always refrigerate opened ketchup promptly. Keep the bottle tightly sealed to maintain quality and prevent contamination.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Freezing is not recommended for ketchup as it can significantly alter the texture and quality upon thawing, making it watery and separated.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, fermented, or unusual smell)
- Visible mold growth
- Significant discoloration or darkening
- Excessive liquid separation that does not easily re-mix
- Bulging or leaking container (for unopened bottles, indicates bacterial growth)
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
If opened ketchup has been left out at room temperature (above 40°F) for more than 2 hours, it should be discarded. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.
Safe Handling
Always check the 'best by' date on unopened bottles for optimal quality.
Refrigerate opened ketchup immediately after use.
Do not consume ketchup if any signs of spoilage are present.
