Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended once opened

Unopened cans/jars can be stored in a cool, dark pantry for up to 1 year or until the 'best by' date. Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate immediately.

Refrigerator

5-7 days

Transfer opened tomato paste to a clean, airtight container. Do not store in the original can.

Freezer

3-4 months

For best quality, freeze opened tomato paste in small portions (e.g., in ice cube trays) then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw in the refrigerator.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth on the surface
  • Off-odor (sour, yeasty, or fermented smell)
  • Discoloration (darkening or unusual color changes)
  • Fuzzy or slimy texture

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods, including opened tomato paste, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Always refrigerate opened tomato paste promptly. Discard any tomato paste that has been left in the danger zone for too long.
