TortillaShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
5-7 days
Store opened tortillas tightly sealed in their original packaging or an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Corn tortillas typically last 5-7 days. Flour tortillas may last slightly longer, up to 7-10 days.
Refrigerator
5-7 days
Store opened tortillas tightly sealed in their original packaging or an airtight bag/container to prevent drying out and absorption of odors. Corn tortillas typically last 5-7 days. Flour tortillas may last up to 1 week.
Freezer
6-8 months
For best quality, wrap tortillas tightly in plastic wrap, then aluminum foil, or place in a heavy-duty freezer bag. Separate with parchment paper if desired to prevent sticking. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth (fuzzy spots, green, black, or white)
- Sour or off-odor
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Hard, dry, or brittle texture (indicates staleness, not necessarily unsafe spoilage unless mold is present)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
While plain tortillas are less perishable than many foods, if they are part of a dish with perishable ingredients (meat, dairy, cooked vegetables), the entire dish must adhere to the 2-hour rule. Store plain tortillas properly sealed to prevent spoilage.
Safe Handling
Keep tortillas sealed when not in use to prevent drying and contamination.
If tortillas are part of a dish containing perishable ingredients (e.g., meat, dairy, cooked vegetables), follow the handling guidelines for the most perishable ingredient.
Always wash hands before handling food.
