Pantry

Not Recommended

2-3 days (opened package, high mold risk)

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep original packaging sealed or transfer to an airtight container. Refrigeration is highly recommended for opened packages to prevent mold growth.

Refrigerator

1 week (opened package)

Store opened tortillas in their original packaging, a resealable plastic bag, or an airtight container to prevent drying out and absorb odors. Place in the coldest part of the refrigerator.

Freezer

6-8 months

For best quality, wrap tortillas tightly in aluminum foil or plastic freezer wrap, or place in heavy-duty freezer bags. Squeeze out excess air before sealing. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature before use.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Visible mold growth (fuzzy spots of any color)
  • Off-odor (sour, yeasty, or unpleasant smell)
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Significant discoloration or drying out

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Tortillas, especially opened packages, are susceptible to mold growth at room temperature. For safety, refrigerate or freeze opened packages promptly.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always wash hands before and after handling food.

2

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping tortillas away from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.

3

Ensure packaging is sealed tightly to prevent exposure to air and moisture, which can accelerate spoilage.

4

Do not consume tortillas that show signs of spoilage, even if within the recommended storage time.
