Tuna salad is a highly perishable food and must be refrigerated promptly to prevent bacterial growth. Do not store at room temperature.

Store tuna salad in a shallow, airtight container in the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below. Refrigerate promptly after preparation.

Freezer

Not Recommended

Not recommended

Freezing is not recommended for tuna salad. The mayonnaise-based dressing will separate and become watery, and the texture of the tuna may change, resulting in a poor quality product upon thawing.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Visible mold growth
  • Discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Perishable foods like tuna salad should not be left at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), it should not be left out for more than 1 hour. Discard any tuna salad left out longer than these times.
