Pantry

Several months to 1 year (unopened)

Store unopened cartons in a cool, dark pantry away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate until opened.

Refrigerator

7 days (after opening)

Refrigerate promptly after opening. Keep tightly sealed in its original container or an airtight container. Do not store in the refrigerator door where temperatures fluctuate.

Freezer

3 months

Freeze in original container or airtight freezer-safe containers, leaving headspace for expansion as milk expands when frozen. Thaw in the refrigerator. Quality (texture/separation) may be affected but it remains safe.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Lumpy or curdled texture
  • Discoloration (e.g., yellowish tint)
  • Mold growth
  • Bloated or leaking carton (for unopened milk, indicates spoilage)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-Hour Rule applies to opened UHT milk: Do not leave opened UHT milk at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Opened UHT milk should be promptly returned to the refrigerator. Unopened UHT milk is shelf-stable and does not require refrigeration until opened.
