Not RecommendedNot recommended
Watercress is highly perishable and requires refrigeration to maintain freshness and safety. Do not store at room temperature for extended periods.
Refrigerator
3-5 days
Store unwashed watercress in a plastic bag or airtight container in the crisper drawer. For best results, wrap in a damp paper towel before placing in a bag.
Freezer
10-12 months
Blanch watercress for 2 minutes, then cool quickly in ice water, drain thoroughly, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers. Best for cooked applications after freezing.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting or limp leaves
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Yellowing or browning leaves
- Off-odor or sour smell
- Visible mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
Perishable foods like watercress should not be left at room temperature within the danger zone for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if above 90°F/32°C) to prevent rapid bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Wash watercress thoroughly under running water before use to remove any dirt or debris.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping watercress separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
Discard any watercress that shows signs of spoilage immediately.
