Asparagus will wilt and lose quality quickly at room temperature. For best quality and safety, refrigerate immediately.

Refrigerator

3-5 days

Store fresh, unwashed asparagus in the refrigerator. For best quality, trim the ends and stand upright in a glass with about an inch of water, then cover loosely with a plastic bag.

Freezer

8-12 months for best quality

For best quality, blanch asparagus before freezing. Wash, trim, and cut into desired lengths. Blanch in boiling water for 2-4 minutes depending on thickness, then cool quickly in ice water, drain, and pack into airtight freezer bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Mold growth (fuzzy spots)
  • Significant discoloration or darkening

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Fresh asparagus should be refrigerated promptly after purchase to maintain quality and safety. Do not leave it out on the counter for extended periods.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash asparagus thoroughly under running water before preparing or eating.
