White WineShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Once opened, white wine should be refrigerated to preserve quality and prevent spoilage. Unopened cartons can be stored in a cool, dark pantry for several months to 1 year, depending on the producer's recommendations, but this is for quality, not safety.
Refrigerator
3-5 days
Seal tightly after opening. Store upright to minimize air exposure and maintain quality. Keep at a consistent cool temperature.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended for drinking quality
Freezing wine for consumption is not recommended as it significantly alters flavor and texture. It can be frozen in ice cube trays or freezer-safe containers for cooking purposes, leaving headspace for expansion.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or vinegary odor
- Cloudiness or haziness
- Presence of mold or unusual film
- Loss of vibrant color, turning brownish
- Unusual carbonation or fizz in still wine
Room Temperature Safety
Not directly applicable to wine in the same way as perishable foods, but temperatures between 40°F–140°F can accelerate quality degradation.
Opened wine should not be left at room temperature for more than a few hours to maintain quality. Refrigerate promptly after opening.
Safe Handling
Always check for signs of spoilage before consuming.
Do not consume if off-odors or visible mold are present.
Serve chilled for best quality.
Avoid leaving opened wine at room temperature for extended periods to maintain quality.
