Whole AvocadoShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Unripe: 3-7 days to ripen; Ripe: 1-2 days
Store unripe avocados at room temperature until they yield to gentle pressure. Once ripe, consume promptly or move to the refrigerator.
Refrigerator
Ripe, whole: 3-5 days
Store ripe, whole avocados in the refrigerator to slow further ripening and extend shelf life. Do not wash until ready to use.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended for whole avocado
Freezing whole avocados is not recommended as it significantly alters their texture upon thawing, making them mushy and unpalatable. For best results, if freezing, mash the avocado with a little lemon or lime juice and store in an airtight container.
Signs of Spoilage
- Extensive dark discoloration (beyond normal browning of cut surfaces)
- Mushy or overly soft texture that is not typical for a ripe avocado
- Sour, rancid, or off-odor
- Visible mold growth on the skin or flesh
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Do not leave cut or mashed avocado at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.
Safe Handling
Wash whole avocados thoroughly under running water before cutting, even if you don't eat the skin, to prevent transferring bacteria from the surface to the flesh.
Prevent cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for avocados and other foods, especially raw meat, poultry, or seafood.
Discard any avocado that shows signs of spoilage, such as mold, off-odor, or significant discoloration.
