Pantry

Store whole, ripe yellow pitahaya at room temperature. Unripe fruit can be left on the counter to ripen.

Refrigerator

5-7 days (whole), 3-4 days (cut)

Store whole, ripe yellow pitahaya in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Once cut, store in an airtight container.

Freezer

10-12 months

Peel and cut pitahaya into chunks. Freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or containers. Can also be pureed and frozen.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft spots or mushy texture
  • Mold growth (fuzzy white, green, or black spots)
  • Sour or fermented odor
  • Significant discoloration or darkening of the skin

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Whole, unripe yellow pitahaya can ripen at room temperature. Once ripe or cut, it should be refrigerated promptly to prevent bacterial growth.
